Best Answer

The Federal Transit Administration, or the FTA, funds transit systems across the United States of America. Their goal is to bring new transit systems online, or improve existing systems.

Is rapid transit a type of railroad?

A Rapid Transit is indeed a RailroadIt depends on what equipment and in conjunction with how the service is run. i.e The Newark city subway is not a railroad, because it does not operate under the Federal Railroad Administration, and it uses street cars. However the New York City Subway System is a rapid transit that also does not operate under the FRA, but it is a railroad type. To prove my statement, the NYC IND Subway System is also known as the Independent City Owned Rapid Transit Railroad. Another example is the Staten Island Rapid Transit and PATH systems they are one of the few rapid transits that actually operate under the Federal Railroad administration. So to my conclusion, I think Rapid transits are true railroads that fall into their own sub category.Dufos
