Lutherans do not believe in divorce, however are released from the marriage when there is adultery committed in the marriage. Mt 19:9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery."

The Lutheran religion does not prohibit divorce, but believes that it is contrary to God's intention and design. Couples are strongly encouraged to work through problems rather than divorcing.

Look at alot of their ministers...Divorced and married for the fourth time. I guess it is frowned upon by some, but most protestants do not teach sound doctrine.

AnswerIn The Bible remarriage while the other divorced partner is still alive is considered adultery and is not permitted UNLESS they were divorced because of:

-fornication,

-adultery,

-upon conversion of one partner to Christianity the other wants to leave.

1Co 7:15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in suchcases: but God hath called us to peace.

As explained by Michael F. Ross in "Biblical Grounds for Divorce and Remarriage" this now comes under the category of 'desertion':-

In summary, Paul teaches that Christians, even those "unequally yoked with unbelievers" (2 Cor. 6:14), should always do all they can to preserve their marriages, both for the honor of Christ and for the spiritual good of spouse and children (1 Cor. 7:14). But if the non-Christian spouse decides either to desert the marriage or to seek divorce, the Christian does not need to work to preserve the marriage. The believer is free to grant a divorce or seek a divorce on the basis of "willful desertion"; and, having been granted that divorce, is free to remarry-but only to a fellow Christian. The deserted and divorced spouse falls into the same category as a widowed person: free to remarry, but "only in the Lord," that is, to another Christian (1 Cor. 7:39-40).

Originally protestants believed that a divorced woman was a 'fallen woman' , and only the first 2 reasons (fornication and adultery) were grounds for divorce, then 'desertion' was allowed. Now, there is no difference either between the divorce rates for christian and secular couples, or the many reasons for them, this leading to "no-fault divorce" thus avoiding apportioning blame and not having "guilty'' and "innocent" parties. It is now a case of what you can get away with. Pity about the kids.

Lutherans believe that man and wife are to stay married forever unless, like it says in the bible, adultery takes place. If a couple divorces for any reason they are not punished by the church, they are to answer to God for what they have done.

The Evangelical Lutheran Synod believes that in certain circumstances that a divorce may be the lesser evil, and the most responsible choice. Getting remarried is not forbidden in the church.
