"M" is the monogram of the coin's designer Hermon MacNeil and causes a lot of confusion for people who aren't familiar with the coin. The mint mark, if there is one, is to the right of the bottom star on the opposite pillar.

And yes, MacNeil DID spell his first name with an "o"!
