Maine was part of the Colony of Massachusetts until it became a state and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820 until it became a state to balance out slave holding Missouri's entrance into the Union.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 allowed a slave state into the union when alternated with a free state. The compromise allowed Missouri to enter the US as a slave state and part of Massachusetts was divided to allow the entrance of Maine into the US as a free state.
Maine. It was one half of the divided state of Massachusetts. It represented another free state in the voting in Congress. This kept the balance, and allowed Missouri to be admitted to the Union as a slave-state.
A little background history: In 1820, Maine was a part of Massachusetts, even though New Hampshire is in between them. Missouri was trying to become a state, but wanted to be a "slave state"- that is, a state that allowed slavery. But the number of slave states matched the number of free states (states were slavery was not allowed). Allowing Missouri become a slave state would upset the balance, which would cause problems, like that the Senate would have more slave-state Senators, and it would give slave states slightly more power in presidential elections (because they would have more Congressmen and Senators). So the Compromise set a bunch of rules about slavery, but the big thing it did was it separated Maine from Massachusetts and allowed it to become a free state. Missouri was allowed to become a slave state. The balance was preserved, which postponed a major confrontation about slavery for a while longer.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 allowed Maine to be admitted to the Union as a slave state. This was to counter balance having Missouri enter the Union as a slave state. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 allowed Maine to enter the US as a free state and allow Missouri to enter as a slave state.

The political balance between slave and free states as of 1819 was disturbed by the territory of Missouri's petition for admission to the Union as a slave state.

Maine entered the US as a free state. The state was carved out of territory ceded from Massachusetts. This was part of the 1820 Missouri Compromise. This act allowed Missouri to enter the US as a slave state. In order to keep the balance between free and slave states intact. And, so Maine was created as a free state.
