My guess is that the NM stands for National Match, a better quality barrel

A serial number that high could only mean a government model 1911 or 1911A1 .45 cal. that was made in 1943 during WWII(1279699 to 1363699) by Remington Rand.
It means it was made for commercial sale as oppose to the ones made for the government ( ie: military )
