Islamic scholars mention that Allah comes from the root word Ilah, which means something that is worshiped. In the Arabic language when you put the definitive pre fix AL in front of a noun you're making it specific i.e. THE chair as apposed to A chair. So, AL+ILAH= ALLAH meaning THE GOD i.e. The only God that is worthy of worship.

This subject of understanding who God is called Tawheed in Islam. Traditionally the scholars of Islam have broken it down into three categories.

Tahweed Raboobiya, which means that you believe that only God created you, provides for you and protects you etc. So, attributing other than God with these qualities will make you a pagan because the pagan is the one who worships the created things. so believing in good luck charms and omens are acts of paganism according to Islam.

Tawheed ebada- This follows on from the first category, which simply states that if God is the ONLY one who created you and provides for you etc than he ALONE is worthy of being worshiped. So, the worship of anything other than God is not acceptable and considered pagan actions. Regardless of whether it is an Angel, a prophet, spirits, stones, Idols, trees etc.

Tawheed al asmaa WA sifat- Since everything that exists has names and characteristics, so do does God. We Muslims believe it is not allowed to liken the creator to the creation. It is not permissable to to paint God in the form of a man or anything else. we believe that God is All powerful, All knowing, All merciful etc and that no creation can be attributed with these qualities. Yes, it is true Humans can be merciful but it is never on the same scale as the mercy of God.

That's pretty much sums it up. The three categories are also inseperable. All three categories combined is the Islamic perspective of GOD.
