It can mean all kinds of things. My service engine soon light recently came on and it appears to be that I am either in need of a tune up or I am in need of an ignition coil replacement. In any case, giving the car a tune up at regular intervals (2 years) would have probably saved me this headache. If you take your car into a local AutoZone store, they should be able to give you a print out of what is wrong with the van. It will usually read out codes from the computer stating diagnostic information, which should aid you in determing the cause of the "Service Engine Soon" light. It might be a $15 fix or it could be a $1500 fix, but there is no way of knowing unless you have a dealer or repair shop read the computer for you.
