To the first answer, the cladding is indeed cuprous but I don't know if it's copper or bronze. It still is: the green colour is that of its oxide, 'verdigris', which slows further corrosion. The "chemicals" in the rain are simply the rainwater and oxygen from the air, although if the atmosphere there is heavily polluted by sulphur this will add weak sulphuric acid to the mix to turn the copper to copper sulphate. I don't know the region's prevailing wind direction: if Easterly it will take the worst pollution inland from New York.
