They don't have a "job" really. They are just the ones that the other wolves submit to. Usually though the alpha male and female are in a monogamous relationship and are the only ones in the pack who reproduce.

The alpha male and female are the oldest members of the pack and the ones with the most experience in hunting, defending territory, and other important activities.

The other pack members respect their positions and follow their leadership in almost all things, The alpha wolves are usually the ones to make decisions for the pack when the group should go out to hunt or move from one place to another.

Think about it this way.

In a school, there is always these kids who are on top, seemingly without reason, right? Well its sort of like that with a wolf. When there are a lot of wolves in one area, there's always this one who's naturally more dominant, and may or may not be strong or smart. It comes naturally to a wolf.
