The Ark of the Covenant was the special box made at God's command, to house the two stone tablets which od gave on Mount Sinai, with the Ten Commandments on them.

The Ark was housed in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). It was made of acacia wood (a type of cedar), and was inlaid and covered with a layer of gold.

The Tabernacle recognize God Holy present God's destiny, ritual and sacrifices. Tabernacle describes an inner shrine (named Holy of Holies) housing the Ark of the Covenant and an outer chamber (Holy Place) with a golden lampstand, table for show bread, and altar of incense. Ark of the Covenant "I will meet with you" was the most Sacred Relic (sacred chest) the Israelites possessed lined/covered by gold.

It could be argued that the Ark was not a symbol as such but an holy object in its own right. The dubious nature of its existence and its sudden disappearance after the reign of Solomon has lead some scholars to believe it may have been a myth.
