What does the baby receive from the umbilical cord?

The umbilical cord contains an artery and a vein, carrying the baby's blood between the baby and the placenta. This exchange removes toxins from the baby's blood and adds oxygen and nutrients from the mother's blood supply. Other substances such as drugs, alcohol and the breakdown components of smoking can also cross the placental barrier and be carried through the umbilical cord to the baby, with sometimes extremely serious consequences for the baby.

For that reason expectant mothers are told to stop smoking, to eat well and to avoid all medications and illegal drugs-before, if possible, during and after the pregnancy for the child's benefit. She should get the doctor's approval of any necessary medications during her pregnancy.
