The book of Malachi chronicles the pronouncements made by the prophet Malachi to the Israelites after they returned to their homeland from being in captivity in Babylon. It is the last of the prophetic books of the Old Testament.
The Israelites were not living in harmony with the Law they had been given by Moses.
Malachi was sent to point out how the priests and the people how they needed to change their ways. He also pointed out that God will judge them based on their deeds. Finally he ties in the final judgment day.
According to The Bible, the 'book of Malachi' was "A prophecy: The word of the LORD to Israel through Malachi."(Malachi 1:1 NIV) Malachi, as a prophet of God, was used to give a warning message to the nation of Israel.
Particularly the priestly leadership of Israel had failed to remain loyal to God, offering sick and lame sacrifices (Malachi 1:8 -(Leviticus 22:19; Deuteronomy 15:21))implying that serving God was unimportant (Malachi 3:14+15), failing to teach the truth and properly lead the people (Malachi 2:7+8) and even lying, oppressing the people, practicing sorcery and resorting to false religion(Malachi 2:11+14-16)(Malachi 3:5+8-10).
Malachi 1:1-14 reminded Israel how God had loved them, but how they had turned against Him.
Malachi 2:1-17 calls the Priests and the people to account for their actions, and their failure to keep God's laws.
Malachi 3:1-18 is a judgement warning and a promise to refine the people.
Malachi 4:1-6 prophesies that God would send a "messenger' and the Messiah (Specifically Malachi 3:1 and Malachi 4:5+6 foretold these events, which found fulfillment John the Baptizer and Jesus, at Matthew 11:10-14 and 17:10-13, Mark 9:11-13, and Luke 1:16,17+76.)
Malachi describes the judgment on Israel and the coming of John the Baptist.

Malachi was a minor prohet in the bible, there is a book with his name in the old testament.
A:We do not know who the prophet 'Malachi' was - there was never a person actually called Malachi. The Book of Malachi was written anonymously, probably in the early post-Exilic period. Verses 3:1-4 refer to 'my messenger' (Hebrew: mal'aki) and it is this reference that gives the book its name: Malachi.ADDITION: Possibly there was no writer of the book of Malachi by the name of Malachi, but since all other prophetic books have historically identified their author in the introductory heading, this suggests that Malachi was indeed the name of the last OT writing prophet in Israel.Jewish tradition identifies him as a member of the Great Synagogue that collected and preserved the Scriptures.
Malachi, the last of the Old Testament prophets, wrote the book bearing his name.A:We do not really know the prophet who wrote the Book of Malachi, but there was no person called Malachi. The word 'Malachi', used in the title of the book, actually means 'messenger' and is based on its use in the text. The author was anonymous, so we know nothing about him.
