There is not a chemical formula for energy as it is not a chemical. However in some contexts such as physics it can be represented as many different letters (depending on the form it is in eg. Kinetic [ke] or gravitational potential [gpe]). Hope this helps :)
In principle, only by comparing the chemical formula for the compound with the formulas of ions known to be polyatomic to determine whether the sequence of letters and subscript numbers (if any) in any part of the chemical formula corresponds to the sequence of letters and subscript numbers in the formula of a know polyatomic ion.

If the formula contains three or more capital letters, then surely it contains three or more different elements? These are all found in the periodic table, and have different names and properties. The formula tells you How much of one thing has bonded with another thing in molecule/compound.
H is the chemical formula for hydrogen. There are some elements with H in the chemical formula. But the have other letters too.

When the term carbon dioxide is written or spelled out, it does NOT need capital letters. However, when it is written as a chemical formula, it DOES need capital letters, as in CO2.
CaS is the chemical formula for calcium sulphide. NB The elemental letters should NOT be separated by spaces. 'Ca S' is incorrect. I should be written as ' CaS'.
