Hold down the units and Select button (found on the upper dash and controls the clock) simutaneously for 10 seconds. This resets your maintenance from that point through another 3K miles, at which point the wrench will appear again.
For an almost 8 year old car that is a bit bad. Most people drive on average 12,000 miles per year. So the Cougar was driven heavily at about 16,875 miles per year. So it's not a gently used car.
The spark plugs on a 1999 Mercury Cougar are located under the cover of the engine. The spark plugs should be changed approximately every 60,000 miles.

I also own a 2000 Mercury Cougar with the 2.0 4 cyc engine. I have 74,400 miles on it and I will be replacing the timing belt at about 80,000 miles. Ford recommends the timing belt be replaced at 60,000 miles. I just changed my right front wheel bearing 2 months ago and now my left front wheel bearing is making a growling noise.
it might mean you need to have your transmission replaced, ive got a 2002 cougar 35th and it has 80,000 miles and doesn't do any jerking of any kind
The belt should be changed every 120,000 miles. This is about 1-2 hour job.
