For the engine to start and run, Something has to make it turn / rotate and that is were the fly-wheel comes into play.
When you turn the key to the start mode it sends power to the starter and a little gear comes out of the back of the starter and fits into the ring gear on the fly-wheel and that turns the engine over so it will start.
