The term "gas" applies to several different substances. Gases are a phase of matter, created when the temperature of a substance is above its boiling point.
GASOLINE - This is a combination of many volatile liquids and gases extracted from petroleum. Its exact composition varies, but it is created by heating and fractional distillation.
NATURAL GAS - Methane gas obtained from underground, or from petroleum. Methane is odorless but the chemical mercaptan (CH3SH) is added to enable detection by smell.
INTESTINAL GAS - Gas that is swallowed into the digestive tract, or produced (as by fermentation) in the bowel. The smell of these gases is usually created by various sulfur compounds.
Oxygen is produced by plants and trees and released into the atomosphere to be inhaled by us. Humans exhale carbon dioxide which plants use to create oxygen.
