Actually, you can water your money tree with any watering can, only, you need a golden shovel to make the money tree grow. You see if you bury money with a regular shovel nothing will happen except you will get that little star on the ground. But if you bury money with a golden shovel, a little sapling will pop out of the ground.

bury one of the shovels, wait a day, (Or skip in time)
then un-dig the shovel you buried and it will be a golden shovel.
