As far as I am aware, a krater is a large vessel like an urn, usually for holding wine at large dinner parties. I could be wrong though, so double check.

It is correct. The original use of the word (κρατήρας) was that. Nowadays it is only used for the big hole in the ground after an explosion or an impact.
