Hydrogen cyanide is commonly known as prussic acid.
Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) was identified in cigarettes smoke but very probably the concentration is not important for health. Far more significant is the nicotine content of cigarettes. Nicotine is a deadlier posion (by ld50) and is also addictive.
Cyanide is very poisonous. Cyanide is sold in a variety of forms such as granules, powder, paste or encapsulated cyanide pellet. This depends on the nature of the cyanide and its intended use. For example sodium cyanide used in manufacturing jewellery is a white powder. Cyanide in paste form used for pest control looks like a gel or paste. And yes cyanide is used in cigarettes, but the addicting substance is nicotine. The lethal dose of cyanide is approximately 0.5 - 1.0 mg/kg body weight or about 70 mg for an adult. My recomendation is stay away from it!
Yes, hydrogen cyanide is highly toxic. It interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen, leading to cellular suffocation. It can be lethal even in small doses.
hydrogen cyanide
Cyanide smells of almonds.
The correct name (after IUPAC rules) is just hydrogen cyanide.
It is not. What happens is that when you burn a complex product like tobacco or indeed almost any substance, if there is nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon and oxygen present there is always the chance of producing something like HCN. It has been proven if you over cook meat on a charcoal grill there is a chance that traces of carcinogens can be produced. So hydrogen cyanide is not present per se, but by burning in a restricted oxygen environemnt, HCN may be produced in minute traces.
Hydrocyanic acid
cyclon b or hydrogen cyanide
Try breathing it, if you're still alive, it's not hydrogen cyanide.
