All 'Birds of Prey', which includes Hawks, Owls, Eagles, etc are protected by law. They all play a significant and important role in maintaining wildlife balance in a given area. Aside from their importance in this respect, they are simply beautiful, magisterial birds that demand our respect and protection.

Hawks are protected under federal law by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which prohibits the harming, killing, or possession of migratory birds, including hawks, without a valid permit. In North Carolina, it is illegal to harm or kill hawks without the necessary permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Violations can result in fines and legal consequences.
