Modern Atomic Theory

1) Atoms are no longer considered indivisible

2) Atoms of same elements may have different atomic weights e.g. isotopes

3) Atoms of different elements may have same atomic weights e.g. isobars

4) The ration in which different atoms combine with one another may be fixed and integral but may not always be simple

5) Atom is smallest particle that takes part in chemical reaction

6) Atom is no longer indestructible

Dalton's Atomic Theory

1) Matter is made of extremely small indivisible particles called atoms

2) Atoms of same elements are identical in all aspects e.g. size, shape, and mass

3) Atoms of different elements have different masses, sizes, and different chemical properties

4) Atoms of the same or different elements combine together to form compound atoms now called molecules

5) When atoms combine with one another to form molecules, they do so in simple whole number ratios

6) An atom is the smallest part that takes place in a chemical reaction

7) An atom can neither be created nor destroyed

How is the modern atomic theory different from Daltons atomic theory?

In Dalton's theory the electrons in the atom travel in a one layered orbital rotation around the nucleus, in the modern, or electron cloud, theory the electrons travel in a more radical patterned movement while still staying in their respected energy levels.

That sounds like John Dalton; he proposed the modern version of the atomic theory in 1805, though.

He contriubuted to modern science with his model for atomic theory which he described was similar to the rings of saturn and he descibed that in his model of atomic theory.
