The Moon is at side of Sun at new moon. @ o O @- The Sun o- The Moon O- The Earth
There are different types of eclipses. Specifically earth related there are two. A lunar and a solar eclipse. In a lunar eclipse the moon is in the earths shadow. ex : 0---->O o key: 0=sun O = earth o= moon During a solar eclipse the moon moves between the earth and the sun causing the suns light to be blocked by the moon. ex: 0---->o O key: 0=sun O = earth o= moon Depending on where on earth you are located these occurrences may or may not be visible or the event may be less dramatic.
O=the sun 0=the earth o=the moon Solar Eclipse - The Sun's light is blocked by the moon, thus creating a short 'night-time' during daylight hours: O o 0 Lunar Eclipse - The Sun's light is blocked out by the earth, thus the moon cannot reflect light from the sun onto the earth, because the earth is blocking the way: O 0 o
sun: O moon:o earth:0 f this is the alighnment Oo0 t wil be a new moon because u can se the mon
The moon is crescent shaped because during part of it's lunar phase, the moon will be situated between the Earth and the sun. Consider the following Diagram: ``D < SUNLIGHT O E X < SUNLIGHT ``D < SUNLIGHT where E is the Earth, O is a full moon, D are half-moons and X a new moon (none visible). O, D, and X represent the moon as it orbits around the Earth. When the moon is located anywhere between X and either D, it is a crescent. This is because part/most of the moon only receives rays of sunlight (~) on what would consider to be the "back" side of the moon. Once it moves past D, the half moon begins to grow into a full moon, where on Earth we see the "front" side of the moon completely illuminated.

The Apollo 11 went o the moon and then returned to earth safely.
