I first thought that the family name Leether or Lether was founded or has started in The Netherlands. A man called Heinrich Daniël Löther came around 1788/1789 from Nassau Weilburg, state of Hesse, Germany to The Netherlands, married there and changes his name into Le(e)ther. Löther, in Dutch Leuther, does have a negative sound. In Germany however the family was mentioned in different church registers as Löther, Löder, Leder, Läder, Loeder.

The basis of the American Lether's is actually formed by three Dutch Lether families who emigrates to the USA. The first in 1904, the 2nd in 1910 and the 3rd in 1957. However in the 1850 USA Census we see Lether's in the USA since 1818 and till now I have no idea where they came from.

In Dutch the name doesn't mean anything and as far as I know not even in Germany, although leder is nowaydays German for leather. Since 1600 we know around 950 Le(e)ther's worldwide. In the UK too the name is used, but according to the people there that is a misspelling of the name Leather and Luther.
