P means pursuit - these fighters were designed to be faster than anything else flying at the time to overtake, or pursue, enemy aircraft - even today the ww2 fighters are the fastest prop planes flying - today since all fighters being supersonic are also pursuit that P is not used though there have been a few jets that are designed specifically to be pusuit - even today the fastest pursuit fighter is the F-104 starfighter which was designed to be little else than a very fast manned "missle" to intercept Russian bombers
AddendumI believe the P (Pursuit) was changed in the mid to late 40s to the F (Fighter) designation.P51
North American Aircraft made the P-51 Mustang.
Spitfire and Hurricane.
All small fighter plane than bombers. Like P51, P47, P38 etc... All of them has been called "little friends". Why Little Friends? They give a protection to the bombers, for that!
North American Aircraft Corp made the P-51. Most were built in their Inglewood,CA plant with many also constructed at a new plant in Dallas.
Those are external fuel tanks, which can be dropped from the plane in flight when they run out of fuel, increasing the aircraft's range. They are also usually dropped when entering a dogfight, in order to reduce weight and make the aircraft more aerodynamic.
437 MPH
No Way!
About 230 Mustangs still fly.
the British hawker hurricane, it shot down the most planes then any others in ww2. The p51 which was only good at long range and was used late in the war to escort US bombers
No such model made by Walther
P51 d mustang is a ww2 fighter aircraft used by the US and allies during the latter stages of the war. it was the first allied fighter capable of supplying protection to the bomber fleets all the way into Germany and back to the bases in England. It was designed and built by North American.
