Imagine appeared on Billboard chart Sept. 18, 1971 reaching #1 for 30 weeks. John wrote and performed this himself (when he was separated from the Beatles group.) John Lennon used political lyrics as well in his songs and certainly very poetic and wrote many great songs, but 'Imagine' had good and bad reviews. From the religious point of view since there was no heaven then there was no God. It was probably a time when John Lennon was going through a change in life like many of us do and he was a 'dreamer' wishing the world had peace from war and that everyone had love and peace in their hearts. What his religious views were before his death is private and no one will ever know that. My personal view is the fact as all of us get older war, killing, genecide, etc., makes no sense and we all wonder why there just can't be peace. I imagine John Lennon was tired like the rest of us and in a mood to write this song. Many people were split in half over the fact the song started out re 'Imagine there's no heaven'. Here's the lyrics to Lennon's Imagine (1971):

Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one
