The male symbol for pokemon is the Mars Symbol (a circle with an arrow pointing out of the upper right). It's blue in the games.
On the left of the part of the card that lists the pokemon's weight/height/type (which is usually right below the picture), first edition cards have a symbol that says "Edition 1" with the 1 in a circle. Hope that helps. :)
