Jesus knew that when people chose to follow him it would create divisions between people, even families for their beliefs.
It is the same today. In some families there are those or even one person that have decided to give their life to Christ and the rest of the family will disown them. This is common in middle eastern religions where they will disown a family member and have even been known to kill a member that has changed to Christianity.
Jesus did not come to unite all people in one big happy "whatever makes you all happy" group. He came to give life to those that forsake the ways of the world and follow him. This causes divisions in the world population.
