The tympanic membrane (also called the eardrum) is a thin membranous tissue separating the external auditory canal from the middle ear. It responds to auditory stimuli by vibrating, transmitting a mechanical stimulus to middle ear structures.

Tympanic membrane gets vibrated as sound waves fall on the same. The vibrations are transmitted to inner ear via three small bones in the middle ear. Tympanic membrane also protects the middle and inner ear from the infection. It acts as the physical barrier, in that case.
