What does the universal joint do?

A univeral joint is on each end of the driveshaft on a rear wheel drive vehicle. They give the drivetrain some flexiblity. All vehicles flex as they move. It also give a little play when you put the car in gear. Saves wear and tear on the transmission and the rearend.
