The practical usage term "volume" stands for the intensity of sound waves. Intensity in turn depends on the amplitude. Intensity is proportional to the square of the amplitude of the sound wave.

"Loudness" is a human response to sound and is thus subjective and depends on the frequency of the sound as well as the absolute magnitude (sound pressure level or SPL) of the sound. Loudness is expressed in units of "phons", while absolute magnitude is expressed in "bels" or the more convenient unit "decibel" (one tenth of a bel). The phon is defined as being equal to 1 decibel SPL at a frequency of 1 KHz and at other frequencies the loudness is related to absolute magnitude SPL by equal loudness contours specified in the international standard ISO 226:2003. In more general terms, the loudness of a sound depends upon the size of the changes in air pressure in the sound wave.

Volume of a sound wave is equal to the what?

The amplitude of a sound wave is the same as its volume.

What does the amplitude of a wave depend on?

In the case of sound, amplitude is related to volume or loudness.- loud sounds generate waves of larger amplitude and your ear would register sound waves of large amplitude as louder.

The difference between pitch and volume?

The difference between pitch and volume is pitch is tone, and what a sound is, and volume is how loud a sound is.

What does the word volume mean in sound?

"Volume" is a term referring to how loud a sound is to humans and animals. Most entertainment devices that use sound have a "Volume Control", typically labelled, "Volume". Volume is not quite the same as "Loudness", by the way.
