The word Buddhism comes from the Sanskrit/Pali word "Bodhi" which means "awakening" or "enlightenment". "Buddha" means "Awakened One", and "ism" is just a suffix denoting a set of ideas, concepts, or beliefs (in this case, philosophical ideas and religious beliefs) added by English speakers.

Buddhism is a one of the six major religions started in Gya, the place in India. It is based on the teachings Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha or "awakened one". Some of the main teachings of Buddhism include the Four Noble Truths, Karma and the Eightfold Path. Buddhism can also be thought of as a philosophy or a science of mind, as Buddhists do not believe in a creator God.

Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to Insight into the true nature of life. Buddhist practices such as meditation are means of changing oneself in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom. The experience developed within the Buddhist tradition over thousands of years has created an incomparable resource for all those who wish to follow a path - a path which ultimately culminates in Enlightenment or Buddha hood.

Because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshiping a creator god, some people do not see it as a religion in the normal, Western sense. The basic tenets of Buddhist teaching are straightforward and practical: nothing is fixed or permanent; actions have consequences; change is possible. Thus Buddhism addresses itself to all people irrespective of race, nationality, or gender. It teaches practical methods (such as meditation) which enable people to realize and utilize its teachings in order to transform their experience, to be fully responsible for their lives and to develop the qualities of Wisdom and Compassion.

There are around 350 million Buddhists and a growing number of them are Westerners. They follow many different forms of Buddhism, but all traditions are characterized by non-violence, lack of dogma, tolerance of differences, and, usually, by the practice of meditation.

That is a very broad question, which can be answered many ways. The meaning of anything will be different to different people. The message of Buddhism is a little more straightforward. It is that our understanding of the world and how we fit into it is limited, but through meditation and reason, with the help of teachers, we can understand the true nature of reality. If we do "wake up" to the true nature of reality, we will see that anger and a lack of compassion for other sentient beings are much more harmful to us than we realize. For this reason, the message of Buddhism is that we should strive to get in touch with our compassionate natures and act with loving kindness.

Buddhism has been described as a very pragmatic religion. It does not indulge in metaphysical speculation about first causes; there is no theology, no worship of a deity or deification of the Buddha.
