Impeachment is the formal charging of an elected official (such as a US President) with serious illegal actions that may justify their removal from office. The act of impeachment in the US is the responsibility of the US House of Representatives. Once the formal accusation has been voted in the House, a trial is convened in the Senate.
Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton are the only two Presidents to have been impeached by Congress, and both were acquitted in their trials and continued in office.
accusation of a public official before an appropriate tribunal
When I think impeachment, I think "impeach the president". Nixon was one of the presidents who was impeached. Impeached means to accuse of a wrong doing in office,

Do you mean 'impeachment'? Impeachment is the process in which an elected official is accused of engaging in a crime.
Charging (of a president by constitutional means for specific types of misconduct) would be the closest word I can think of for impeachment.
Two charged for a crime
• Impeachment is an indictment (enough evidence to put one in trial) –the accusation of wrong doing by a public official which leads to a trial • Impeachment does not kick you out of office or mean you are guilty! (I got this right from a book!!!)
Clinton was acquitted of the impeachment charges by the Senate.
Impeachment means to bring a formal charge of criminal wrongdoing against an elected official (you are thinking of the President). It does NOT mean trying them. The House of Representatives conducts Impeachment proceedings. If the President were impeached by them (has happened 2 times) then the President would be tried by the Senate.
Articles of Impeachment are precise statement of the facts upon which an impeachment of a government official is based. In the US Constitution under Article I Section 3, for example, the President can be impeached and removed only for Treason, Bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors. The House of Representatives draws up and votes on the Articles of Impeachment stating the facts that allegedly amount to those offenses. Articles of Impeachment are likened to the counts of an indictment against a defendant in a criminal case.Note: Impeachment refers to the process. Impeachment does not mean removal. A conviction for impeachment means automatic removal from office.
Impeachment.
The word "impeached" means to accuse or charge a public official with misconduct. It does not imply a conviction or removal from office, as that would be a separate process following the impeachment.

"Impeach" is a verb. "Impeachment" is a noun.
