"Hoosier" is the nickname of a person from the US state of Indiana. There are different legends of how the name came into being. One that is the most often told in Indiana is that back in the early pioneer days when someone would approach a cabin at a homestead or village they would always call out so they didn't surprise the rifle-bearing occupant of the cabin. Often they would say, "Hello inside" or "Hello the cabin". Then they would be "greeted" by a loud response from inside the cabin of, "Who's here?" This became slurred into "Hoosier".
