The Fourth Nuremberg Principle states:"The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under ... law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him".

According to "First Principles," a citizen is a sovereign, self-governing entity. When a citizen volunteers to defend his nation, he is assuming the highest responsibility of citizenship. As such, the soldier is the highest form of citizen (if such a thing may be ranked).

There are some who wish to curtail the natural rights and franchises of soldiers within the ranks which normally accrue to citizens. They wish soldiers to be mindless servants of the "king," tools of state authority to subjugate the masses, etc.

Soldiers -- as citizens -- do not forfeit (i.e. lay aside) their natural rights and privileges (and responsibilities). They may temper certain aspects of their rights as citizens for the sake of good order and discipline, but they are not mindless cannon-fodder bound to unquestioning obedience and loyalty to ambitious politicians.

George Washington said When we assumed the soldier we did not lay aside the citizen what does this mean?

During the War of Independence of 1775-1783 the Continental 'soldiers' were indeed American citizens. they were farmers, lawyers, clerks, shop keepers, and factory workers who wanted freedom from the high taxes and tyranny of England. They were just like your regular neighbors of today who wanted to be free. So, the citizen was indeed the soldier as the soldier was the citizen. You are a citizen today in the 21st century, would you not fight for freedom if need be again? Alex B. (Check out this video clip by 3 doors down- Citizen Soldier)

When classical republicans spoke of the office of citizen what did they mean?

They meant that the citizen should set aside personal interest and help the common good. Citizens were to do this by being well-informed and engaged in community affairs. This emphasized duties, not rights.
