On the surface, it's a reference to the tonal qualities of music. However, the veil potentailly implies the twoness of being black and American-- a DuBois allusion. Also, the entire paragraph calls to mind the primitivism often associateted with the depiction of black Americans and African music/qualities, especially in writinsg prior to the Harlem Ren. Many black writers from the 1920s and 1930s used these "savage" images to contrast the stereotypes with the humanity blacks of the times.
