My Grandmother told me that the two small lines under the small c for example-- McClung---means that you have married with in the same clan. So the two small lines meant that they were second cousins marrying with in the same clan to preserve their bloodlines. She died about fifty years ago at the age of 87 so during her time, the ways of the clan were set in stone. All "proper" young ladies had an arranged marriage between the parents. Usually when the girl was 15 she would be "pledged" for at least a year before marriage. During this time the couple was never left alone. If she left her home place for an event, they would always be chapperoned by one or more her family members. Understand though, my grandmother was of the Rominchal Scots.(travellers). They were allowed a kiss at time of pledging and not after until marriage. If the girl breaks this long tradition she is outcast and called "kuervah" which means low class and no scruples. This tradition is in effect to this day.
