An ultrasound is a device that uses the reflective properties of sound waves to form an image of the interior of the body.
The most commonly known use of the ultrasound is to check the development of the fetus inside the womb. The device is moved around to capture "slices" (cross sections) of the fetus to check for abnormalities and orientation.
A form of ultrasound known as pulsed wave Doppler can also be used to determine the velocity of blood flow inside of a vessel. If the dimensions of the vessel are known, this can be used to determine the presence of a blockage.
Ultrasound is generally a 2 dimensional technology, but 3 dimensional ultrasound does exist and is gaining wider usage.
