It has at least two uses.

First, it is an adverb meaning "as of this time, although this may change". "I haven't practised my piccolo yet" means that at this time you have not practised, but you intend to get around to it soon. Likewise the question "Have you taken out the garbage yet?" means "Have you taken out the garbage now, or are you going to get to it very soon?" The implication is that you ought to have taken the garbage out a long time ago, so if you haven't done it, you had better start now.

"Yet" is used for a single action which takes place quickly. If we are talking about a repeated or habitual action which should change but hasn't, you must use "still". E.g. "Have you bought your new shirt yet? Or are you still wearing the old one?"

Second, it is a conjunction meaning "however, on the other hand". E.g. "I have heard all the arguments about quitting smoking, yet I can't resist when someone offers me a cigarette."
