Its a metabolic disease where the body can't produce enought/any insulin. And that caused elevated levels of glucose in your blood.

Metabolic disease also involves a condition known as "insulin resistance". It is true that the body sometimes can not produce enough insulin. However, in the early stages of the disease the body can produce too much insulin and the cells which are responsible for making energy do not respond to the insulin message. The insulin is unable to carry its message to the body as the insulin receptors no longer work properly. This is cause by an unhealthy consumption of sugar and highly glycemic foods in type two Diabetes. A diet with too many processed grains and simple carbohydrates can accelerate "insulin resistance". White bread, highly processed cereals and some wheat bread is notorious for causing high sugar in the blood stream. The body responds by producing too much insulin and this results in dangerous body fat storage. It also causes the body to stop responding to the insulin message. It is similar to the law of diminishing returns. The more insulin you have the less effective it becomes! The little boy who cried wolf too many times was simply ignored. This is also true in the world of insulin! The process can sometimes be reversed with hormone therapy, exercise and proper nutrition. The other type of diabetes occurs in children. It is not always caused by poor eating habits. It may be inherited and requires drug therapy and insulin because it will not respond to these lifestyle changes alone. Type Two Diabetes is a progressive disease whereas Type One Diabetes is more sudden and dangerous. The body simply is incapable of processing the carbohydrates we consume. Diet and exercise will not reverse Type One Diabetes but can still be important to follow with proper medical treatment.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body doesn't make insulin or enough insulin. Insulin is necessary for sugar to be transported across the cell membrane into the cells. Sugar is used by the cells to make energy for life. Think of insulin as a transport truck that delivers sugar into the cells. No truck, no sugar. No sugar, no energy. No energy, no life.

Can you survive without knowing you have diabetes?

No. If you have diabetes and do not manage it, you will not survive. For Type 1 diabetes, where your body no longer produces insulin (helps convert glucose to energy for your body) you could die within days due to extremely elevated glucose levels. For Type 2 diabetes, where your body becomes resistant to insulin (essentially you don't process the glucose as efficiently) it could take quite a while longer, in which case you may die due to complications of having high blood glucose levels for extended periods of time.
