Besides the landscape being more open country with meadows, fields, woods, etc., rural communities lack many things that large cities have, mainly:

  1. a lower total population
  2. few businesses
  3. few job opportunities
  4. fewer schools in the small rural community
  5. few to no public services, such as fire department, police department---they must rely on a neighboring town
  6. poorer condition of roads
  7. no public transportation
  8. lower local taxes
  9. lower crime rates
  10. zero to one for jails or prisons
  11. little to some tourism
  12. fewer people taking vacations because they work farms

Rural Communities however have:

  1. higher number of acres owned by one family
  2. higher number of farms
  3. higher numbers of planted fields
  4. higher percentage of seeing barns and silos
  5. higher numbers of livestock
  6. higher numbers of farm machinery versus regular cars and trucks
  7. higher numbers of unemployed teens and young adults unless they work on the family farm
  8. higher isolation but stronger family and church values
  9. more young adults migrating away from their rural homes to find work
  10. more middle aged to older adults working on farms

Rural areas are large and isolated areas of an open country with low population density. The terms "countryside" and "rural areas" are not synonyms: a "countryside" refers to rural areas that are open. A forest, wetlands, etc. with a low population density is not a countryside.
