Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine medication which works by enhancing a depressant (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) which is naturally present within the brain. This results in 5 intrinsic effects, muscle relaxation, anxiolysis (anxiety relief), amnesia, sedation, and anti-convulsant. It is only indicated, however, for the treatment of anxiety.

Lorazepam should not be used with alcohol, products containing GABA, or barbiturates, as all these medications work on the mechanism. It may also cause increased sedation and respiration if taken with other types of depressants such opiates.

What is Lorazepam?

Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine drug with multiple effects: sedative, anticonvulsive, antianxiety, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant. Introduced in 1971, it is most often used to treat anxiety and is widely available under the brand names Ativan or Temesta. Pure lorazepam is a whitish powder. As a medicine, it is dispensed in tablets containing from 0.5 to 2.0 mg of lorazepam. The drug can also be given as an injectable liquid, intramuscularly or intravenously. Though relatively safe, there are many contraindications and cautions for this drug; it should only be used as prescribed by a medical doctor and in accord with all physician and manufacturer guidelines. Two cautions in particular are worth noting: the drug may cause death if taken in excess with alcohol, and it may harm the unborn child.
