When the public discovered that MacArthur and Patton had attacked veterans and burned their shantytown at Anacostia, (which wasin eyesight of the capital building), Hoover's reputation was compromised. The fact that the shantytowns all across the country came to be known as "Hoovervilles" is indicative of his reputation. Of course when Roosevelt was elected, he didn't want to pay the bonus early either...
