The riots were in the words of Elanor Roosevelt "Race Riots" against Mexican Americans. She was correct despite the editorial position of the Los Angeles Times which called the First Lady a communist. It was a bad situation made much worse by assigning police officers to large bodies of soldiers and sailors on a rampage with orders not to arrest them for assault and battery or any other crime. The military put a stop to all shore leave and 12,000 Hispanics were rounded up and deported to Mexico.
