Origin of Rhode Island name?
The State of Rhode Island says that it was originally Roodt
Eylandt, Dutch for Red Island and that it was Anglicized when the
English took over from the Dutch. There is also some thought that
one of the early Dutch explorers looked at a small nearby island
and said that it was 'about the size of the Island of Rhodes' a
famous port in the Mediterranean.
