Well, in WWI, tanks gave militaries the advantage, of course, but they were clumsy in the beginning, and their drivers were not the best trained, since everyone was inexperienced with them.

Tanks served to break the stalemate of trench warfare, spearheading successful infantry assaults and advances, terrifying and routing enemy troops. Since World War I was largely static, getting the lines of battle to move was a tremendous accomplishment, and one greatly aided by the tank.

In terms of the overall conflict, very little. However, the introduction into warfare of the mechanized fighting machine revolutionized the concept of cavalry, and allowed the development of the armored divisions that so greatly influenced World War II, which continues to the present day.

they were mostly used to safely cross no-man's land (the area in between opposing trenches). but the broke down a lot and the men inside were often stranded.
