There are both physiological and psychological effects when attempting to quit. The physiological effects (nervousness, sleeplessness, increased appetite) are due to withdrawal from nicotine, the addictive substance provided by smoking. The psychological effects are a combination of reactions to the physical cessation and reactions to a disruption of familiar habits, which are usually more ingrained with a longer period of smoking.
Some smokers have found that partly replacing the nicotine (patches, sprays, or gum) can alleviate physical withdrawal, but eventually the addiction will be broken with or without these aids. Some have addressed the psychological effects with replacements (gum, foods, or non-nicotine cigarette replacements).
All of none of these may be tried with varying degrees of success. Basically, a smoker must have the will power to follow through on his decision to quit.

One can help another quit smoking by being supportive. Not smoke oneself next to the person, which is trying to quit, avoid places, where people smoke, and attempt to distract the quitting person from smoking.

Quit Smoking MJ
It would depend on how long you had quit. If you had only recently quit, smoking would probably start your habit all over again. Other than that, it would have all the same effects it had before you had quit but since you already had smoked before, the effects would accumulate faster and probably become magnified.

Smoking is a horrible habit and is also extremely hard to quit. There are numerous things on the market now that will assist your father in trying to quit smoking, but first he has to want to quit. There are things such as Nicorette gum or lozenges as well as a nicotine patch that he can use to help him.
