The tars and smoke in tobacco, after a long time of using, destroy the tiny hairs called cilia that line the respiratory tract. Their job is to move the mucous that your tract makes. The mucous gets embedded with these particles. The cilia then moves the mucous and particles up and out. You swallow these and your stomach acids destroy all of it. The cilia are like a janitor who always sweeps up the messes. If these are destroyed, the whole thing comes to a halt and you then have to try to cough and pull up this now thickened mess.
Smoking is very bad for the respiratory system. It could cause cancer or an inability to breathe the correct way.
