It was wise for returning US servicemen NOT to mention that they were in the military or in Vietnam (hide the fact that they were veterans...the employment applications normally asked that information; sometimes resulting in NO employment for the vet (discrimination). Open hostility, ridicule, but probably the most common attitude given to returning Viet War vets was indifference.

Soldiers were affected by "the war" in numerous ways. You might want to describe which war, because mankind has fought thousands of wars in our short history. In general, soldiers are most affected by being, you know, killed. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is also a common affliction suffered by Veterans.
