Probably it relates to 'Sic transit gloria mundi' - (all the glories of the world are transient). Even the powerful and handsome knight dies and is reduced to being no more than a meal for the crows. He doesn't even get a decent burial. All is vanity in the long run even for the so called 'winners' in society.
