The element Mercury, and its compounds, were widely used as antiseptic treatments because of their ability to kill bacteria.

The use of mercury and its compounds as antiseptic treatments was eventually discontinued when it was proved that people were actually being poisoned to death by the gradual, and irreversible, accumulation of mercury and its compounds within the human body.
